What is Club d'Escacs Sant Cugat?
It's the chess club of Sant Cugat del Vallès, a non-profit that has promoted chess in the town since 1929. It's open to everyone, from young children to competitive players, with three teams in the Catalan League.
Is there a chess school for children?
Yes. The club's chess school runs small beginner and intermediate groups for children in Sant Cugat, with club equipment provided (boards, clocks and worksheets). Students who wish to can also play the federated youth championships.
Are there chess lessons for adults?
Yes, we also run chess lessons for adults, whether you're starting from scratch or improving your game. Adult groups pick one of the weekday afternoon schedules.
Is there a free trial class?
Yes, the first trial class is free and with no commitment. Write to us at santcugatescacs@gmail.com and come try it before signing up.
How do I become a member, and how much is it?
To join, you fill in the membership application and we get back to you within a couple of days to complete the process. The annual club fee ranges from €22 for minors to €55 for seniors; the Catalan Chess Federation licence is separate and is processed with your sign-up.
What days does the club meet, and where is it?
The club is based at Casal Cultural de Mira-sol (C/ de Mallorca 42, 08195 Sant Cugat del Vallès), in the Mira-sol neighbourhood. On Friday afternoons there's school, social games and Catalan League rounds, and the school also runs sessions on Thursday afternoons.
Do I need a federation licence — is it competitive?
No licence is needed to attend the school or to be a member. The Catalan Chess Federation licence is only required if you want to play the Catalan League or federated tournaments with the club; many members play just for fun.
